What an AI sleep coach can and cannot do

Short answer: An AI sleep coach is a calm, always-available source of practical, general guidance based on what you tell it. In RaisingSmall it helps you think through routines, wake windows and small changes — with a transparent limit of up to 40 messages a day. It cannot examine your child, diagnose anything or replace a doctor.

Why the distinction matters

The word "AI" is over-hyped and over-promised. Parents deserve to know exactly what they're getting — helpful everyday ideas, not medical authority. When it's clear what the coach is for and what it isn't, it's used better and more safely.

What an AI sleep coach can do

  • Answer everyday sleep questions in plain language, any time — even at 3 a.m.
  • Help you read your own notes and pattern.
  • Suggest gentle, common approaches (routine, timing, environment).
  • Take the edge off the night-time panic of not knowing what's roughly normal.

What it cannot (and should not) do

  • Diagnose a medical or developmental condition.
  • Examine your baby or listen to their breathing.
  • Replace your GP, child health clinic or a sleep specialist.
  • Guarantee results or "fix" sleep.
  • Know anything you haven't told it.

How the coach works in RaisingSmall

The coach is deliberately built as practical everyday help — not a medical service, and with no promises of miracles:

  • Available whenever you need it, with a clear limit of up to 40 messages a day.
  • Works with what you track in the app, so the advice fits your child.
  • Doesn't diagnose and is open about its limits.
🧊 A clear 3D diagram on the home screen (sleep, feeding, drinking at a glance) gives you the context that makes it easier to ask the coach good questions.

How to use it well

  • Give it context — your child's age and roughly how sleep looks now.
  • Treat suggestions as ideas to try, not orders.
  • If something doesn't feel right, stop and call a professional.
  • Combine it with your own overview of sleep.
From my practice

Most parents I've spoken with didn't want a diagnosis at 3 a.m. They wanted reassurance that what they were going through wasn't anything terrible, and one small tip to try in the morning. That's exactly what an AI coach can do well — calm and an idea. What it can never do, and shouldn't, is replace a doctor's eyes and hands when a parent has a real worry. Those two must not be confused.

What about privacy and data?

In RaisingSmall almost everything stays stored locally on your device. The questions you choose to send to the coach leave the device only to generate a reply. So don't send anything you'd rather not send, and treat the coach as a helper — not a file about your child.

When to talk to a professional

If your child's breathing worries you, if they're very hard to wake, if they aren't gaining weight, or you have any concern about their health or development, contact your GP or child health clinic (in the Netherlands, the consultatiebureau). The AI coach is not a medical service and doesn't diagnose.
